Dar Charity Goat Races Chair, Karen Stanley (4th L) addressing a media conference during a function to  launch the 2015 charity goat races scheduled for 30th May in Dar es Salaam. A brief occasion was held in Dar es Salaam yesterday. Looking on are representatives from companies sponsors a charity event.
Since the first race was held in 2001, the Dar es  Salaam Charity Goat Races have raised over 980 million shillings for local charities, and in their 15th  year are on track to pass the billion shilling milestone.

The 2015 Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races will take place from noon, on Saturday, 30 May at The Green on Kenyatta Drive. Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races Committee Chair, Karen Stanley, says the continued support  the Goat Races receives from the community is invaluable.

„Each year we are able to put on this event because of the support from a number of sponsors and of course the people who attend the event,‟ she said.  „And with the date set, we are encoring people and organisations to become a goat owner for the day.

„Owning a goat is a lot of fun, especially if it wins; but it is also a good way to get behind the races and help us raise money,‟ Ms Stanley added. With goat numbers limited, prospective owners are encouraged to visit the website and download  a form to avoid disappointment.

For those wanting to don a costume and try their luck in the fancy dress parade, the theme for  this year‟s Goat Races – Bollywood – provides plenty of inspiration. „While it is all a bit of fun, the reason we organise this event each year is to raise funds for local  charities, so I also request any registered Tanzanian charity to visit our website and download an application form,‟ Ms Stanley said.

The Wonder Workshop, in Dar es Salaam, is a local NGO, which provides jobs for people with disabilities.  General Manager with the Wonder Workshop, Francesca Tettamanzi, says charity events, such  as the Goat Races, are an important resource for smaller NGOs. „We aim to be self-sufficient, with sales covering most of our running costs, but occasionally unexpected things happen.
       „
That‟s where charity events, such as the Goat Races really help; they help fill a gap, whether it is  to support a new project or to cover unexpected expenses,‟ Ms Tettamanzi said
